An Interactive Narrative on Life During World War I

This interactive narrative presents a compelling exploration of World War I through the prism of four distinct parallel stories, each narrated by an unconventional protagonist.

• Forte Belvedere - from 1915 to 1916: This segment delves into the psychological toll faced by soldiers amidst the relentless bombardment of Forte Belvedere. Players navigate the complex network of tunnels as they embody Karl Humelberger, a young aspiring officer.
• Jesenice - from 1916 to 1917: The evolution of local factories in response to community needs is captured here, alongside the intricate relationships formed among individuals from neighboring regions. Through the eyes of Marija Golob, a peasant who has left the fields behind, players witness the dramatic transformations in Jesenice.
• Bitola - from 1917 to 1918: This narrative focuses on the harrowing realities encountered by medical professionals tending to the wounded. Players join Guillaume, a young soldier in the French colonial troops, as he spreads hope and faces desperation beyond the front lines.
• Austria - from 1918 to 1919: Highlighting the impact of a pandemic, this storyline draws poignant parallels with contemporary issues. Players race against time alongside Corina Stengheli, a nurse navigating the challenges posed by the Spanish influenza epidemic.

Unlike traditional war games, The Rude Awakening reexamines historical events through a unique lens, shifting focus from claustrophobic fortresses to the shattered realities of small towns at the front and the overwhelmed hospitals during a global health crisis. The project's collaboration with nine European partners has enriched its narrative with access to rare historical materials from four countries' museums, enhancing its authenticity and depth.
